Limehouse

Circus, Issue 3, Interview and cover, September 2009

When did you start drawing pictures?
I started drawing many moons ago after leaving the world of graphic design behind. I picked up a pen and never looked back.

What was the very first picture you ever remember drawing?
I don’t seem to have any of the drawings from when I was very young and presume they were thrown in the bin. Luckily now I choose whether they go in the bin or not.
What are the main inspirations for your work?
I look at the world around me the only way I know how and it all comes out in the drawings.
Favourite and not so favourite piece of work to date?
My favourite projects are the ones I create and then I can listen to my own thoughts. I have also enjoyed working with many clients as they get in touch knowing what I do and want me to put my personality into the work. Recently I have been enjoying the challenging world of animation.
Have you ever ran away anywhere?
I think I remember running away when I was very young and what felt like an adventure in the wilderness was probably me standing behind a bush.
Have you ever gone to the circus?
I have memories in my mind but I’m not sure if they are mine or from a TV detective series like Murder She Wrote or Diagnosis Murder. A clown found out that his daughter who is the high wire lady was being harassed by the ringmaster. He was threatening to sack her if she didn’t accept his advances. A few days later the ringmaster was found knifed to dead on the spinning target. Several people told the police they had heard the clown arguing with the ringmaster and some suspiciously obvious clown shoe footprints were also found at the crime scene. The police immediately arrested the clown as he was clearly guilty. Towards the end of my memory a meddling part-time pretend investigator revealed that the real killer was in fact a young juggler. He had recently joined the circus and was the illegitimate and abandoned son of the ringmaster and wanted revenge.

If you could be anything or anyone in the circus what or who would you be?
I would be the person selling popcorn and fizzy drinks at a great profit.
If you could design your own circus what would it be like?
There would be many genetically modified animals performing unimaginable entertainment for your pleasure.
Best circus act you have ever seen?
Modern life, QVC and peas in boiling water all dancing around are all entertaining to watch.
Popcorn or candyfloss?
Many years ago I would have chosen candyfloss, then I moved onto caramel popcorn, then sweet popcorn and now I have ended up at the salty popcorn option as my favourite.
Ian Stevenson’s top tips for being a great ringmaster?
Get a whip and don’t before afraid to use it.
Were you see yourself in 10 years time?
Probably travelling through space encountering alien species from distant galaxies. We’ll have some kind of international space federation and try to get all alien species we meet to follow our morals. It worked on earth didn’t it so in theory it should work across the whole universe. No but seriously… I have many ideas and want to create more drawings, animations and music but must keep them a secret until they are done.

Will you come back to Dublin and draw on all our rubbish bins and the likes?
Yes that would be great and please show me to the bins. I plan to finish a book called ‘Rubbish Art’ featuring photos from my drawings on rubbish project.
Is Marmite a good thing or bad thing?
I’m not sure about Marmite it’s a bit like the concentrated essence of death. I was however part an exhibition called MarmArt a few years ago where artists were invited to create artwork using Marmite.
What word best describes you?
Maybe an odd noise would be more suitable. It would sound mysterious and enchanting with happy melodies over low tones.
