Street Art

December 2008

Street Art showcases the work of some of the genre’s most influential practitioners. In illuminating interviews, over 60 artists share their working methods, reveal their inspirations, and explain how they reach their audience. Their varied stories chart the rise of street art as a popular and commercially successful art form.

Describe your drawing process.
I put a pen in my hand and then move it about. Sometimes I know what I’m going to draw and other times things just happen. I enjoy thinking up ideas when travelling as it’s a good time to focus. Then when I’m back with the pens I can draw the idea.

Do you experiment with different papers, pens etc?
Yes sometimes I pretend the pen is a magic wand and make the paper into a pointy hat and speak in a strange wizard voice.

What are your favourite pens?
I use many pens and they are all good for different things. Uni Poscas draw on most things and are great for doing large scale work.

You’re known for drawing on found objects on the street… what appeals to you in the opportunities that these random finds present?
It’s great to walk around the street and see what’s about. Every object I find is different and then I bring it to life in it’s own individual way. I enjoy that it’s immediate and that the ideas cannot really be planned. Then when people walk by and see the characters they may think about rubbish differently.
